What does a professional need to treat you?

Acupuncture is a growing field and it’s helping many people deal with illness, pain and other conditions. But clients still have many questions about it. So on our blog, we will deal from time to time with those questions.

Last week, we asked you about an acupuncturist’s qualifications. Do you know the state licensure requirements for an acupuncturist? Also, do you know the state requirements for a physician or chiropractor?

As promised, here is the answer, from the state’s Department of Regulation and Licensing:

Formal education requirements – Completion of a course of study of at least 2 years at a school accredited by ACAOM (Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine).

Also required – NCCAOM exam in acupuncture. (NCCAOM – National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine)

MD’s, D.O.’s, Podiatrists and Physician’s Assistants can practice acupuncture without additional training. Chiropractors cannot practice acupuncture without receiving the same training as listed above for acupuncturists.

When considering acupuncture, you are encouraged to ask professionals about their training. The NCCAOM requires a minimum of 1490 hours of acupuncture and most schools require 450 more hours in supervised clinical training. Also, Wisconsin at this time does not require licensure for acupuncturists to prescribe herbs. However, those that have graduated with a degree in Oriental Medicine have to meet NCCAOM’s requirement of 2050 hours of both acupuncture and herbal studies with additional supervised clinicals in prescribing herbals.

For more information Check the NCCAOM website: www.nccaom.org

Hot weather can trigger asthma problems. Find out how Oriental medicine, acupuncture and cupping can bring relief.

Asthma can be easily aggravated during warm and humid weather. Oriental medicine can be an effective adjunct therapy. Acupuncture may be utilized to decrease heat aggravating bronchial spasms. Cupping may be utilized to relax the muscles between the ribs. That will enable a person to slow their breathing rate and allow the person to breathe more deeply. Chinese herbals and dietary modifications may be recommended to lessen asthmatic attacks. However someone with asthma should always carry an emergency inhaler.
